Thor 3D 4/5
The marvel films have never failed to disappoint me (with the exception of Fantastic Four) and from this I was eagerly anticipating the release of Thor, to kick off the summer blockbuster season with a bang.
The story centres on the powerful and arrogant warrior god Thor, who is banished from the realms of Asgard after confronting and engaging in a war with the Frost Giants in Jotunheim. As his punishment, his father Odin casts him down to earth, where Thor is forced to live an everyday life among humans. On earth, Thor learns life’s lessons and falls in love with Jane. Thor soon learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.
I held a rather high expectation of this film and it did not fail to disappoint. I thought that Hemsworth was perfectly cast, easy on the eye and very likeable as Thor. There are of course a number of humours’ moments throughout the film which add light relief to a rather serious film. I am not familiar with the Thor from the Marvel universe, however cannot see how this film would disappoint long term readers of the comic book.
Anthony Hopkins starred as Thor’s father Odin and played this role well, however I felt that this character could have been further developed as he did not play a main role in the film. This could have been the way that the filmmakers intended it though, after all the film is titled Thor. Newcomer Tom Hiddleston played Thor’s brother Loki, a role that I was really impressed with and that the audience could get their teeth into. The final battle scene particularly sticks in my mind, very well constructed and developed with the audience almost feeling empathy for the Loki.
Marvel has again provided the audience with a fantastic journey into one of their character’s story and with the upcoming Avengers movie, I have a feeling that the audience will be readily awaiting to see all their favourite superheroes unite.
Good points: The design of Asgard, the fight scene in New Mexico when he gets his hammer back, hospital scene and the final battle on the bridge.
Bad points: Lack of chemistry between Portman and Hemsworth, this romance could have been further developed.
